Supporting Learning at Home

Helping your child thrive

Back to Parents

Learning doesn't stop at the school gate. There are many simple ways you can support your child's education at home, making learning fun and building on what they do in school.

Reading

Reading with your child every day is the single most important thing you can do to support their learning. Just 10-15 minutes makes a huge difference.

Tips for reading together:

  • Make it a special time - find a cosy spot and minimise distractions
  • Talk about the story - ask questions about what might happen next
  • Let your child see you reading too - be a reading role model
  • Visit the library together and let them choose books
  • Don't worry if they want to read the same book again!

Phonics

At FVIS, we use Read Write Inc Phonics to teach phonics. You can support this at home by:

  • Practising the sounds your child is learning in class
  • Playing "I spy" games using letter sounds, not names
  • Helping them blend sounds together to read words

Mathematics

Maths is everywhere! Here are some ways to make maths part of everyday life:

  • Count everything - steps, toys, items at the supermarket
  • Spot numbers - on doors, buses, prices, clocks
  • Talk about shapes - find circles, squares, triangles around you
  • Cook together - measuring, weighing, and timing
  • Play board games and card games
