British Science Week 2026

This week we celebrated British Science Week across the whole school, with every year group embracing our value of being curious through hands-on investigations and discoveries. From fossils to frogs, minibeasts to camouflage – it has been a week full of wonder!

Reception – Fossil Detectives

Our Reception children showed their curious minds beautifully. They explored the term ‘scientist’ and discussed how scientists ask questions about the world around us. The highlight was a mystery box reveal – inside was a real fossil! The children went on to discover the job of a Palaeontologist (or as they called it, a ‘dinosaur doctor’). They asked brilliant questions and then headed off to the sand tray to explore more bones and fossils for themselves. In Forest School, they made clay impressions with natural materials, linking it back to how fossils were formed millions of years ago.

Year 1 – Minibeast Hunters and Camouflage Experts

Year 1 became real scientists for the week! First came the Minibeast Hunt, where the children searched for creatures based on specific criteria – ‘six-legged’, ‘no legs’, and even the ‘master of disguise’. Then came the Camouflage Challenge: the children headed into the woods to ‘forage’ like birds, searching for pieces of coloured wool ‘worms’ hidden in the undergrowth. They quickly realised that some colours are much harder to spot than others – a brilliant, practical lesson in how camouflage helps animals survive.

Year 2 – The Science of Growth

Year 2’s focus was on growth – exploring what it means and the variety of things that grow in our world. The children studied the life cycle of a frog, following the journey from tadpole to fully grown frog, and used play dough to model each stage. They also went on an offspring hunt, matching photos of baby animals to their adult counterparts – and who’d have known a baby sloth was so cute! To finish, they matched baby photos to members of staff, with some sharp eyes spotting shared features. It made for lots of laughter and a truly memorable moment.

Curiosity at Its Best

British Science Week is always a highlight of the spring term, and this year was no exception. Seeing the children ask questions, make predictions and get excited about the world around them is exactly what our school value of being curious is all about. Well done to all of our young scientists!
