Curriculum Map
The children have made a fantastic start to the Summer Term—this may well have been our busiest half-term yet! From poetic performances to digital storytelling, Year 1 has been buzzing with energy and curiosity.
In English, we delved into the world of performance poetry. Using Julia Donaldson’s Poems to Perform as our guide, we explored rhythm and rhyme through Michael Rosen’s The Rhythm of Life. We even used sensory water play to inspire descriptive vocabulary before performing Tony Mitton’s Voices of Water in groups.
Our creativity continued in Art as we launched our new unit on sculpture and 3D form. The children became sculptors by shaping paper strips in a variety of ways—including zigzags, rolling, and twisting—to create incredible "3D drawings."
In Maths, we’ve mastered counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s, and used arrays to unlock the secrets of multiplication. We’ve also begun our journey into fractions by finding halves and quarters of shapes and numbers.
Our young scientists and designers have been focusing on the natural world. In Science, we’ve been busy labelling plant features, conducting bean investigations, and learning to distinguish between deciduous and evergreen trees. Meanwhile, in DT, we began investigating fruits and vegetables, exploring the differences between them and learning all about where they grow.
Computing: We turned into authors and programmers! The children created their very own e-books, learning how to add animations and sounds to bring their stories to life.
PSHE: We focused on relationships, having some wonderful discussions about friendship and showing respect towards ourselves and others.
Music: We enjoyed exploring different sounds, tempos, and beats.
Geography: We headed to the coast to compare the seaside with our local area.
History: We defined the concept of "beyond living memory" through the lens of famous explorers.
RE: We deepened our understanding of Judaism with a fascinating visit to a local synagogue.
PE: A huge "well done" to the children for their May Fair dance—they were so proud to perform for you! We also enjoyed a brilliant afternoon of cricket skills at Chinthurst School (complete with well-deserved cookies and juice).
We hope you all have a wonderful half-term break and look forward to seeing you for our very final term of Year 1!
