British Values
Preparing children to be responsible citizens
At Fetcham Village Infant School, we actively promote British Values throughout our curriculum and school life. These values are embedded in everything we do, helping children develop into responsible, respectful citizens who understand their role in society.
Democracy
Children learn about democracy through class discussions, school council elections, and having their voices heard. We encourage children to share their opinions respectfully and understand that everyone has a say.
How we promote this:
- •School council elections
- •Class votes on activities
- •Pupil voice surveys
- •Circle time discussions
The Rule of Law
Children learn the importance of rules and laws in keeping us safe and why they exist. They understand the consequences of actions and the importance of following rules fairly.
How we promote this:
- •Class rules created together
- •Understanding school behaviour policy
- •Visits from community helpers (police, fire service)
- •Learning about consequences
Individual Liberty
Children are encouraged to make choices safely, knowing they are in a supportive environment. We promote freedom of expression while understanding the impact of our choices on others.
How we promote this:
- •Choosing learning activities
- •Expressing opinions safely
- •Making friends independently
- •PSHE lessons on making good choices
Mutual Respect
Our school values emphasise kindness and respect. Children learn to treat others as they wish to be treated, celebrating what makes us similar and different.
How we promote this:
- •Our school value: "We are kind"
- •Celebrating achievements
- •Respectful language and behaviour
- •Turn-taking and sharing
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Children learn about different faiths, cultures, and beliefs through RE lessons and celebrations. We foster understanding and appreciation of diversity in our community and wider world.
How we promote this:
- •RE lessons exploring different faiths
- •Celebrating festivals from various cultures
- •Welcoming visitors from different backgrounds
- •Stories and books reflecting diversity
Connected to Our School Values
Our six school values - being kind, brave, working well together, trying our best, being curious, and being honest - complement and reinforce British Values. Together, they help shape children who are ready to be positive members of their community and society.
