Forest School

At Fetcham Village Infant School, we’re proud to offer Forest School—an inspiring, child-led approach to learning that takes place outdoors, whatever the weather! Rooted in respect for nature and the belief that children learn best through play and exploration, Forest School allows pupils to develop confidence, independence, and resilience through hands-on experiences in a woodland or natural environment.
What is Forest School?
Forest School is a long-term outdoor learning process that supports holistic development. Sessions are designed to encourage children to explore, take appropriate risks, solve problems, and collaborate with others—all while connecting with the natural world around them.
Forest School is not just an outdoor lesson—it’s a unique educational experience that fosters:
- Curiosity and creativity
- Social skills and teamwork
- Emotional resilience
- Physical coordination and strength
- A deeper connection with nature
What Will My Child Do at Forest School?
Every session is different and primarily led by the children, but children can expect to enjoy activities such as:
-
Den Building: Working together to construct shelters using natural materials—perfect for developing teamwork and engineering skills!
-
Mud Kitchen: Stirring, scooping, mixing and imagining in our messy but magical mud play area.
-
Climbing and Balancing: Using trees, logs and natural features to develop physical strength and coordination.
-
Nature Crafts: Creating art with leaves, twigs, clay, or even learning basic weaving.
-
Tool Use: Under very close adult supervision, children may use tools such as peelers, hand drills or saws. These activities are carefully planned to teach responsibility, precision and safety.
-
Campfires: Children may help prepare and enjoy a small campfire—perhaps even toasting marshmallows or cooking simple snacks. Fire lighting is introduced in a gradual, structured way with thorough safety procedures.
Tools and Fire – How Do We Manage Risk?
We understand that introducing tools and fire can raise questions for parents. At Forest School, we embrace “risky play” with a careful and professional approach known as Risk-Benefit Assessment.
Before any session involving tools or fire:
-
All activities are thoroughly risk-assessed by trained Forest School leaders.
-
Children are taught safety rules and shown how to use tools or approach fire step-by-step.
-
Children are always supervised closely and encouraged to reflect on their own safety and the safety of others.
-
Protective equipment is used where appropriate, and group sizes are kept small during high-risk activities.
We believe that these opportunities help children learn to manage risk in a safe and supported environment—a skill they will carry with them for life. You can see a copy of our risk-benefit assessments at the bottom of this page.
Come Rain or Shine
Forest School happens in all weathers, helping children develop resilience and a positive attitude toward the natural world. With the right clothing, mud and rain only add to the fun! We’ll provide guidance on what your child will need to wear depending on the season.
Who Leads Forest School?
Our sessions are led by a L3 qualified Forest School practitioner (Mrs Wright) trained in outdoor learning, first aid, and risk management. They work closely with teaching staff to support each child’s individual needs and development.
