Welcome to Hedgehogs' class page. Here you will find useful information about what we have been learning and what we will be learning over the half-term.

Please do contact our Year 1 Lead, Miss Sebastian if you would like any more information on our Year 1 curriculum.

What a magnificent end to the term for Year 1! The children have been incredibly busy with some truly brilliant learning experiences, culminating in a magical Christmas performance of ‘Barmy Bethlehem’ (and a special sing at St Mary’s Church!).

Our English work revolved around the story 'Look Up' by Nathan Bryon and Dapo Adeola. The children explored meteor showers, made inferences, and wrote persuasive flyers. We even had a call from the main character, Rocket, and researched her hero, astronaut Mae Jemison, to write a short biography.

In Maths, children successfully learned two methods of subtraction (number line and crossing out) and developed their understanding of the characteristics of 2D and 3D shapes. In Science, we became investigators, learning to identify and group everyday materials.

In History, the class explored their personal chronology, created memory boxes, and compared how children celebrated birthdays in the past versus now.

In Geography, we defined and identified landmarks in our local area, moving on to read and draw aerial maps of our playground.

RE, we focused on the story of the Nativity and in DT applied our design skills to create functional pencil pots based on stable structures.

Beyond the curriculum, we were delighted to welcome members of the Leatherhead Women's Football Team for an exciting visit. We also had the pleasure of watching a fantastic concert performed by the children in the 'Rock Steady' club! Most fittingly, we also had the opportunity to take part in a Christingle celebration to mark the season.

We are so proud of all the hard work in Year 1! Happy Christmas to all, and we will see you in the New Year.

  --------------------------------------------------------------------

The Year 1 children have settled into the new academic year wonderfully and are showing a great eagerness to learn. It's been a busy and productive start to the term, with exciting activities across the curriculum.

Our English journey started with the delightful book, 'Mini Rabbit Not Lost' by John Bond, reading a few pages each lesson to build suspense as the story develops. Writing activities have included setting and character descriptions, command sentences, poems, and formulating questions. We brought the story to life through drama, acting out scenes, participating in "conscience alley" to explore character choices, and performing our own poetry.

In Maths, we have been comparing sorting numbers, learning to see how numbers fit together using the part-whole model. We have also reinforced the number bonds within 10 and practised fundamental additon skills.

We have covered a lot in our Foundation subjects, too! Geography lessons have centred on local awareness, identifyin physical and human features around us and naming the four countries of the UK.

History saw us look back at the important events in our own lives so far and explore key milestones. Our Science lessons covered seasonal changes, including identifying key transformations, noting the shift in daylight hours, and linking them to seasonal celebrations.

In Art, we unleashed our creativity by exploring different lines and shapes while studying the work of famous artists like Paul Klee and Bridget Riley. For RE, we learned about the significance of the Bible for Christians, including their belief in God's seven-day creation story, leading to a discussion about the wonder of our world.  The children have enjoyed integrating technology into their learning, using the Chromebooks in Computing to practice logging in and saving their work.

The children have absolutely loved our new weekly Gardening Lessons! Every Wednesday, regardless of the weather, they've been eager to get outside, making these outdoor sessions a huge hit and a wonderful way to connect with nature.

A big well done to the Hedgehogs class for their incredibly positive start! We're thrilled to be on this journey with you and are committed to making this a memorable and successful year.
