Looking After Ourselves

At Fetcham Village Infant school, our priority is the children's welfare. We are committed to support the emotional health and wellbeing of all children and our staff team.

At Fetcham Village Infant School there are many ways in which we teach the children about positive mental health and wellbeing:

  • Our school Values are explicitly taught to all children and evident in all areas of school life

  • Throughout our curriculum and everyday school life, we encourage and support the children to identify and understand their feelings and emotions

  • Embedded in our behaviour policy, we encourage the children to be resilient when challenges occur, to be ready to learn, have a positive mindset, and to be respectful to others

  • We proactively teach the children to be self-confident, celebrate their own and other's achievements and develop their self-esteem

  • We teach the children about the importance of sharing their feelings with others

  • We support the children to build and maintain positive social relationships with others

  • We use the JIGSAW PSHE scheme of work to help the children appreciate the importance of caring for themselves and others

We recognise that some children may require additional emotional support when dealing with challenges. We understand that these challenges may make children feel particularly vulnerable at times, and we are committed to support any child with targeted and appropriate assistance. Everyone deserves to have positive mental health and we understand that it is a shared staff responsibility to ensure the positive mental health and wellbeing of every child.

To further support the work we do as a teaching team, we are fortunate to have trained members of staff who are specifically designated to provide children with specialist support in times of need.

Mrs Scottow is our Mental Health Lead. Mrs Scottow works with the teaching team to plan, administer and advise on support strategies with the aim of promoting positive mental health for specific children.

Mrs Lewis is our ELSA practitioner. Mrs Lewis provides targeted interventions for children to improve their emotional literacy.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's mental health or wellbeing, please contact Mr Sharp (SENCO) who will be more than happy to support and advise.
